What causes an iPhone to display the “SIM Not Supported” message when GSX says the device is Carrier Unlocked. I have a Verizon iPhone 7 Plus that GSX says is Unlocked, but whenever I put in a Verizon SIM card, the “SIM Not Supported” message gets displayed and is bricked until I remove the SIM card. In settings, the carrier is listed as “Verizon 13.0” which makes it more puzzling it’s not accepting any Verizon SIM card. Tried AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint with no avail, but GSX says it’s Unlocked.
Techically Verizon legally can’t SIM lock their LTE devices thanks to the FCC, but they do lock down the IMEI as non paid until it is fully paid off. I know with the AT&T/T-Mobile/Sprint iPhones you unlock it by restoring the phone (or in the cases of the Carrier XX.0 unlock, change the SIM) to remove the SIM lock (my old iP4 was still an AT&T 14.0 without SIM restrictions while my free 3Gs was AT&T 14.0 and converted to Carrier 14.0), so that may be what needs to be done. By this point, the 7 is well and truly to the point nearly 100% of them are unlocked, but there may be a few left that are possibly greylisted (IMEI locked due to nonpayment), sold as prepaid (yes, it happens) or still on a payment plan. The problem with getting this information is Verizon won’t tell you the status of the phone unless you’re authorized on the old account. They may say it’s greylisted but can’t tell you when it’s free and clear but that’s about all you will get from them. You generally need to pay for the SIMlock and carrier status, but a site like this will lead you in the right direction.
If it is confirmed unlocked, you may want to do a restore and reactivate, maybe that will push new unlock status to your phone. If it is possible, try it under Verizon network and using Verizon SIM first.
