Driving down the road, pick up my phone to use it and boom nothing. Won’t turn on, won’t charge. My battery life has always been awful, so I figure it finally died for good. I take it into the Apple store for a second opinion, Genius points at charging port and shows that covering two of the terminals is evidence of a spark. She said there’s no way to fix it. Is the entire logic board shorted out or just the charging port? Could I take it to a shop and have the charger replaced? I’ve swapped several digitizers and I understand the basics of the phone, but I’m incapable of soldering or anything of that sort.

Josh, besides not knowing what caused this, I would suggest you start by replacing the dock connector. Here is the guide for it, and the part is available right here as well as many other places. Hope this helps, good luck.

I would start with a toothbrush and rubbing alcohol scrub on the dock connector and a hard reset first…
