I like to test the following: Touch response across the entire screenLook for dead pixels and good backlightCheck all buttons Test all cameras, flashTest all microphones and different modes of recordingCheck all sensors (proximity, ambient light)Check all radios (WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE) This only takes a few minutes and should be done before a repair and after. That way you know for certain what worked before.
