Is it just me, or does the Airport card in an iMac just use a mini PCI-e connector? In theory, doesn’t this mean it could potentially be replaced with a different PCI-e card that would add a performance or feature upgrade to the machine? Such as a RAID controller, eSata, SAS, USB 3, etc? I honestly have no need for WiFi in my iMac, but would love to have more upgrade options.
Its one thing to have a viable connection, the other is having driver software so the OS can interact with the device you connected. Sorry to say you can’t use the AirPort card slot for these options.
Mac OS X came with the drivers needed, so you can install most of those upgrades. However you will have to cut a hole in the back to let the cables out. There is not much space inside the unit to fit upgrades
