I have a top load, direct drive washer. The water fills, spins, drains without issue. The problem lies somewhere with the agitator. Normally the top part of agitator spins clockwise, then the bottom part spins partly counter-clockwise to agitate the clothes. It is only spinning clockwise. I have completely taken apart the agitator and nothing seems broken (dog tabs, agitator teeth, drive shaft splines, etc). I also double checked the motor coupling and that seemed fine. I think the issue may be with the clutch assembly or transmission itself. The machine makes a very loud sound during the agitation cycle (sounds almost like an unbalanced load, without the washer wobbling all over the place). What are some signs it may the clutch or transmission itself? *Edit: The machine does the spin cycle without any issues and drains perfectly fine, but the clothing gets really spun up around the central agitator since it is ONLY spinning clockwise during the wash cycle.

Thanks for everyone who provided some suggestions. Turns out the issue was with the gearbox/transmission. Now I’m sure you savvy people would be able to take apart the transmission, swap out whatever gears were causing the issue, and be back in business, but I just don’t have that kinda time. I just bought a brand new transmission, swapped it out, and we are good to go.

Hi @diyforever , Given that you have inspected the most likely mechanical components and they seem OK, here’s the Admiral Washer ATW4475VQ0 Wiring Sheet W10199994 (found from the parts list - see p.2) that may help to prove whether the problem is electrical or not.

I have the same style of washer but in the LG flavor. check the power going to the motor. as a DC motor changes direction when the current is reversed. a voltmeter fine the ground and watch it. you should see it jump from positive to negative or they may have additional wire(s) that do this. one may have corroded and can provide enough power or may be shorting on something causing the noise. but here is a video to help you out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8mo_7SD
