hello, love the site, I have ordered 2gb of ram and see where my machine can run up to 3gb of ram. I currently have 1 gb of ram that it came with installed, is it as simple as adding the new ram to a open slot if thats the case? I have not opened the unit yet because i lack the proper tools. Thank you so much.

Hello! Thanks for your kind words. We love the site too! You have 2 RAM slots in your machine. To max out your RAM, you will need one 2 GB chip and one 1 GB chip. It is possible that your machine has two 512 MB chips to equal a total of 1 GB. You will, however, need to remove one of those to insert the 2 GB chip. Honestly, you will not see a remarkable performance difference between 2.5 GB and 3 GB though (so it might not be worthwhile to switch out a 512 MB chip with a 1 GB chip after you have the 2 GB chip installed). I hope this helps!

Bad idea with the RAM though, you shouldn’t have unblanced RAM, so instead of getting a 2GB and adding that with 1Gb and 2gb, get two 2GB for a total of 4GB, i don’t know about iFixit, (if they’ll purchase it), but i know that OWC will give you a rebate on RAM.

Great topic and great site. I upgraded my MacBook Pro RAM several years ago. Please, please pay attention to the angle at which the chip seats; it’s finicky. How much RAM is the MacBook Pro 17" able to recognize? I thunk it was 3GB but, now I’m wondering if Snow Leopard has the ability to exceed that. Your thoughts are appreciated.

That was a tremendous answer, thanks so much.
