Chosen Solution

Hello Here’s my issue: I want to upgrade my screen from FHD to UHD on a G9-792 and since I see both 4k and 2k versions on the market, I think its possible. I’ve did some googling and found out that:

  • FHD pannel is: LP173WF4-SPF1, and ebay sellers state its has a 30 pins eDP connector. -UHD pannel is: B173ZAN01.0 (AUO109B) and it has a 40 pins connector. I’ve did some further research by partially disassembling my laptop and here’s what I see inside - it actually has a 40 pin display connector on the motherboard while my display is FHD. Thus I’m not sure if 4k model will work with it. To be consistent, here’s a pic http://storage3.static.itmages.com/i/16/… Please advice.

will answer myself. I’ve bought the pannel. I’ve bought the cable. Attached it. I saw the bios logo and setup showing ok so I’ve bolted all together. Afterwards I’ve figured out that after any software tries to change screen resolution it just shows blank screen.

  • on ubuntu - it shows black screen but its possible to adjust brightness. grub works fine. with nomodeset option you can boot it but you’ll loose brightness controls and you can’t alter panel resolution. xrandr reports 1920x1080 max resolution for it (I have an external display to check that) and 0mm x 0mm screen physical dimensions - seems display is not fully supported. -on windows - it will boot fine on clean win10 setup and will show you 4k resolution. You can install nvidia driver and it will still work. But after installing intel one - it will show you black screen. So its just initialized improperly by UEFI or there’s something else to do with it. There is G9-792 with a screen like that so the bios v1.05 should be compatible. Any ideas appreciated just in case: don’t put it into legacy mode - you’ll see no bios setup to revert it. Will have to attach back the old panel to be able to siwtch it to EFI back

Update: successfull upgrade. The issue was new 4K display had a broken EDID. After flashing the correct one it works perfectly. Recomended bolt-in upgrade!

regarding battery issue - predator has a mini switch from the the back cover side. while its open - it will start on AC power only. check your board - it may have the same switch. regarding your cable - google which cable 4k model should use and buy the exact cable which fits your model. regarding your display - the chance its a broken EDID is very low. also it was impossible to reflash that with i2c tools like its usually possible (its possible to read but not to write it) so I had to take it to a good service in my city (I was not able to find a proper one from the first attempt - some people do not realize EDP has no direct connection to EDID EEPROM and it took some time to find a guy who had a service manual access and an appropriate tool to do that).

Your current FullHD cable is 40 pin (motherboard side) => 30 pin (display side) You need a 40=>40 one, part number is 50.Q04N5.015 - you can get that from amazon, ebay or… I’ve just ordered mine in the nearest laptops repairing workshop. Regarding panels - BEWARE OF THE FAKE AUO panels! Ask seller if its a genuine AUO. Mine has awfull colors, I’m looking where to get the original one. I’ve borrowed one from my friend’s alienware - it looks perfect. Regarding flashing - you don’t need that, my panel had a defective EDID. Its just a bolt-in upgrade. Also there is a compatible model from Sharp - SHP1446. Alienware owners say AUO is better.

For those who’re going to do this upgrade and buy AUO109B display from Ebay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1hdNcHo… Check this - there are fake AU Optronics displays on the market these days. Always ask seller if their displays are original AUO.
