We have a 1988 4wd Chevy pickup and the 4 wd drive worked when we bought it, but the next time we tried it, it doesn’t work. Took off the actuator and one of the wires was broken, so we bought a new actuator and put it on, but it did not fix it. Do you have any idea as to what we can do to fix it? Thanks.
Do you have the floor shifter or the buttons on the dash? If you have the buttons like my truck you probably need to replace the switches as well .They are temperamental at best and after a while we get rammy with them and they need to be replaced. If its a floor shifter be thankful its not the dash buttons and crawl under your truck and check the linkage . You can also check to see if the actuator is making a long enough stroke to engage the 4x4. If the actuator is not seated properly it can come up short and not engage. have someone run the actuator with you under the truck and see if its all moving properly. You can also disconnect the actuator and see if you can move the linkage in manually this will tell you if there’s damage beyond the actuator piston
My truck is a 2000 Dodge Dakota QuadCab and the shift on the floor is moving freely. I assume the linkage underneath the console is disconnected. Question is how easily can the lever, or whatever it is underneath can be reconnected? John
