Chosen Solution
When opening the lid of laptop it makes a loose crackling sound and now horizontal lines with black on the bottom of screen. Before I could wiggle the screen and it would be ok, but now black won’t go away. Any help would be appreciated.
Please connect your PB to an external monitor and tell us if the video is normal or not. At first sight from your description there could be a problem with the LVDS cable or the LCD panel but to exclude the graphic processor failure we need a description of an external monitor view.
This is a known problem on this model of PowerBook. It happened to one of our household computers after we sold it to a friend, and the display had to be replaced (it got done by iresq.com.) It may also be the video cables that run through the hinges, a pretty difficult fix.
