I know that it is not considered possible to add extra memory to a MacBook Air/Pro that has soldered memory chips. However, I am aware that some people have successfully managed to solder additional capacity memory chips on to a non upgradeable MacBook: https://hackaday.io/project/164191-macbo… I wouldn’t try to do this myself - certainly not with a heatgun and I don’t have the soldering skills to us an IR solder even if I had access to one. If the extra memory chips could be bought (and it seems that they can be) would it be worth risking an otherwise working Macbook Air/Pro if the job was done by a competent PCB soldering provider?
Yes, it can be done! It all comes down to costs and your skills! You do need to proper gear like a hot air rework station Quick 861DW 1000W Digital Rework Station with LCD Display Unless you are planning on opening up a business working on systems I really don’t think its worth it! That still puts the question of your skills in micro-soldering. Getting a replacement logic board with the larger amount of RAM (16 GB) is just cheaper in the long haul. I really don’t recommend going higher as the power drain also has to be considered!
