Chosen Solution

I want to install a Sony XAV-AX5500 into a vintage car. Because of the lack of room in the dashboard, I need to separate the screen from the main unit. This way I can have the screen in the dashboard in the main unit further down, possibly in the glove box. I disassembled my unit following the steps outlined in the excellent “Sony XAV-AX100 display replacement ” elsewhere on this site. I now have three questions:

  1. What is the proper way to disconnect is that specific ribbon connector. Normally those types of cables have a clear male or female connector at each end. But here it almost seems like the ribbon itself is being pressed into the receiving connector on the motherboard. I don’t want to risk pulling it off for fear of breaking something. 2: what is that strange black wire on the left side which seems to go to a small 16mm wide printed circuit angled at 45°. It looks like that black wire is a single conductor soldered onto that printed circuit. Would it be safe to simply unsolder it? It almost looks like an optical receiver of some sort… Maybe infrared for the remote? 3:I need to find it a long version of this ribbon. It is a Ventura V-flex 20798 30 pins. Ideally it would be 1m / 3ft long. Any idea of where I could find that by any chance? I see some short ones (250mm) on eBay but not longer ones. thank you very much for any help - or redirecting if there is a better site for these questions. Bob

Robert Edwards looks like the cable is secured via the black clasps. There is an indentation for your fingernail ;-) and you would gently moving it in the direction of the arrows (either end). Take a look at where the cable meets the clasp. Its eccentric and moving it upward will free the cable. Be gentle to those black plastic pieces (clasps?) They love to crack since they dry out quickly.

The black wire seems to be the Bluetooth antenna.
