My iPod video (5th generation) is not powering on anymore. In the right light, I can see the Apple logo appear on the LCD and the lower 20% of the screen or so shows black horizontal scan lines. Shortly after this the screen fades and I can press a button for it to happen again. Before the iPod turned off mid-use I had seen the battery at about 50%. It’s running rock box, the battery usage indicator isn’t always accurate but I don’t suspect the battery died. After a full night on charge I’m only able to note the behaviour above. Battery is not original, I replaced it along with hdd about 5 years ago. Anyone seen this before? Worth trying a new battery or should I finally send this to the graveyard?

I disassembled the iPod and put a multimeter against the battery. I was measuring 3.4v when it should be around 3.7v ideally (didn’t test under load). I plugged the USB power in and tried to power on the iPod again and was able to see a faint “Very Low Battery” message. I suspect the battery may be dead after all.
