Replaced the optical with a second sdd that initially is seen and I can work with it but after a time it disappears only to return when I re-boot. Any idea what to troubleshoot?

You’ll need to check if the system is able to support the drive. Some MacBook Pro’s have a timing issue with the optical drives SATA port as Apple only designed it to support the slower SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) optical drive.
