I recently got an old SEGA Game Gear from and E-Waste collection I helped with. I put all 6 batteries in and flipped the power switch but the screen only stayed on for a second. The screen color is a light gray when it turns on and I’m wondering if some internal component is screwed up or if I just need a cartridge for it to work?

From what it looks like, it could be some bad caps. A common problem with the Game Gear from what i’ve read. Got a Game Gear for some repairs, same problem. Turns on for 1 sec and then it goes off again. So just replace the caps and see what it does.
