I dropped my phone in the sink and there is water but it is not fully submerged. I think it may have a problem with corrosion but I’m not entirely sure. The cord and the part where you connect the cord gets really hot even after just 1 minute of charging but it won’t charge. It also smells burnt. I just got this phone 11 months ago and I can’t buy another replacement. Pls help me.

Edit: I looked through it with a magnifying lens and I think a part of it has melted (not really sure though it could also just be dirt) due to the overheating.

Hi @fixitfairy, The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone’s operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it has been properly cleaned away. First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible to minimize any further damage. Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion. If possible, do not use “rubbing alcohol” as in some cases this is <70% IPA, can contain additives which may leave conductive residues and is not as effective. If you do have to use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the % of IPA the better Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the boards. Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again. Here is a video that shows how to dis-assemble the phone which may be of some help. If doing all this seems too daunting, contact a reputable, professional mobile phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote. Do it sooner rather than later as it isn’t going to fix itself and may even get worse.
