Hi, I recently bought a 512GB WD SN530 2242 SSD on eBay, but unfortunately the S.M.A.R.T status is not working. I recently did a diagnostic, here are the results: SYSTEM INFORMATION ### Report Timestamp : 12 aprile 2021 11:05:11 CEST Report Timestamp (ISO 8601 format) : 2021-04-12T11:05:11 Application Name : DriveDx Application Version : 1.10.1.701 Application SubBuild : 0 Application Edition : Standalone Application Website : https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx DriveDx Knowledge Base Revision : 100/100 Computer Name : MacBook Pro di Claudio Host Name : MacBook-Pro-di-Claudio Computer Model : MacBookPro14,1 OS Boot Time : 2021-04-11T12:10:09 Time Since Boot : 22h 55m 02s OS Name : macOS OS Version : 10.16.0 OS Build : 20D91 OS Kernel Version : Darwin 20.3.0 SAT SMART Driver Version : N/A ATA Command Support Tolerance : verypermissive N of drives with S.M.A.R.T support : 1 DRIVE 1 OF 1 ### Last Checked : 12 aprile 2021 11:04:49 CEST Last Checked (ISO 8601 format) : 2021-04-12T11:04:49 Advanced SMART Status : FAILED Overall Health Rating : N/A 100% SSD Lifetime Left Indicator : GOOD 100% Issues found : 3 Serial Number : 2030BD808716 WWN Id : Volumes : Macintosh HD Device Path : /dev/disk0 Total Capacity : 512.1 GB (512.110.190.592 Bytes) Model Family : Western Digital NVMe SSD Model : WDC PC SN530 SDBPMPZ-512G-1101 Firmware Version : 21110001 Drive Type : SSD Power On Time : 27 hours (1 days 3 hours) Power Cycles Count : 7 Current Power Cycle Time : 22.9 hours DEVICE CAPABILITIES S.M.A.R.T. support enabled : yes DriveDx Active Diagnostic Config : Western Digital NVMe SSD config [ssd.nvme.wd.def.01] Sector Logical Size : 512 Sector Physical Size : 512 Physical Interconnect : PCI-Express (PCIe) Logical Protocol : NVM-Express (NVMe) Removable : no Ejectable : no NVMe Revision Supported : 1.40 PCI Vendor Id : 0x15b7 Thermal Throttling Supported : no Volatile Write Cache Supported : yes Maximum Data Transfer Size : 128 Pages Log Page Attributes : 0x1e Format NVM Attributes : 0x0 Optional Admin Command Support : 0x0 Optional NVM Command Support : 0x5f (Compare, Wr_Unc, DS_Mngmt, Wr_Zero, Save/Sel_Feat, +) Number of Power States Supported : 4 Error Log Page Entries : 255 Keep Alive Support : 0 Total NVMe Capacity : 512.110.190.592 (512.1 GB) Unallocated NVMe Capacity : - Or do I proceed with the return of the SSD to eBay?

Sadly you are hitting the limits of an M.2 drive being used in a MacBook Pro system which was not designed for the M.2 SSD’s with these adapters. I often pull them out of systems as they just don’t hold up. Sure you use them for a time and they look so good! If you are a heavy user you’ll kill it in no time. Best to stick with either an Apple SSD or one of the 3rd party drives which are properly designed for your system OWC or Transcend. Here’s a bit more on the Apple SSD’s The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs So return it get your money back and invest it in a better drive.
