Hello everyone, While using it, my rMBP suddenly died and refused to turn on. Tried all the tricks, reset PRAM and SMC etc. Nothing worked. Went to the Apple store and they told me the logic board and battery need to be replaced for $1100, which I refused because I’d bought the device for $1000 four years ago. They said the battery is swollen and that the logic board itself is okay, but the processor on it is dead. So now this device of mine has become a paperweight overnight. Is there anything I can do here? Can I salvage the RAM and SSD and use it elsewhere? Update (09/07/2019) Ok, so I opened it up and went through it slowly. I checked all visible connectors and only one was disconnected (keyboard backlight) and none were loose. All other parts looked normal with no staining or corrosion. So, I removed the heat sink to find dried thermal paste on the processor. I cleaned it up with isopropyl alcohol and microfibre cloth. Could the dried thermal paste lead to the processor overheating? I used the device pretty heavily for programming (Android Studio, Xcode, Chrome with 15+ tabs, terminal, android emulator etc.). Also, couple of days before the macbook stopped working, it froze suddenly and I had to hold the power button down to restart it. This happened twice. I don’t know if it’s related in any way. I’ve attached the photos here (https://imgur.com/a/18t7REf) if you’d like to look at them and see if I missed anything.
mmm… Let’s first check the logic board. Carefully take the bottom cover off. If the battery is badly swollen you’ll want to take the system outside just in case. What we want to do here is disconnect the battery (follow the first five steps in the guide below) as well as the charger, then press the power button for a minute to fully drain the logic. Now leaving the battery unplugged, plug in the charger the system should spontaneously boot up and the MagSafe should be Amber in color. Did it? If it did your logic board is AOK and you only need a new battery. Your SSD drive is removable and you can get a case to hold it so you can recover your data as well as use the drive as an external. But let’s first see if we can first get your system going here.
