I replaced my Moto G5 Plus screen after the old one cracked. Replacement screen image was perfect but digitizer did not work at all, neither do I hear start up sounds when powering on, though I don’t always hear startup sounds with the old cracked, but still working screen. I put my old cracked screen back in, works reasonably well given the extent of the cracks. Got an RMA replacement, second replacement screen does exactly the same thing, image is great, no digitizer activity, no sound. Put old cracked screen back in, very degraded now as bits of glass are falling out, but otherwise it still works. I looked online for screen initialization procedures but didn’t see any. Screen model matches my Moto G5 plus. I am out of ideas.
This is likely a problem with the quality of parts you are getting. Where are the parts coming from? There are reputable retailers online that sell parts that are high quality. A quick Google search should give you some options. We use parts from these retailers all the time and very rarely have problems. As for using your old screen. Some packing tape will go a long way to keep glass from chipping off and cutting your fingers for the time being.
Same problem here, moto g5 plus, the replacement screen from ifixit is not touch responsive at all though the display is fine. Touch still works when I switch back to the original screen. I tried wiping the cache and even erased all data via the bootloader with no success. What was the outcome in your case?
I had the same issue with a genuine Motorola screen. After I installed the screen I booted the phone to the boot options menu and hit the start option. After that the screen worked.
