I replaced my macbook battery because it was dying immediately after unplugging. I used it for awhile with the power cable duct taped to the laptop. Yesterday I finally got around to replacing the battery and it’s doing the exact same thing - dying immediately after unplugging. Is there anything that can be done before buying another battery and testing my luck again?

I would recommend you check your ports. I suspect one of the connections is not working properly try using the other side. Using a USB-C power meter like Satechi USB-C Power Meter should help isolate which is a bad port or if the systems charging logic is really the issue. How about installed this gem of an App CoconutBattery and take a snapshot of the apps main window as well as the battery info tab and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question That way we can be sure you have a battery issue Vs something else.
