G5 model 1969 1.8 GHz Tried to start up 2nd time holding option key and the mouse worked and got grey screen with a circular arrow and a right facing arrow. Is the new hard drive bad, or am I not doing something right?

Use your original system installation disk to boot from (insert disk and hold down “C” key on start up. Go to the second page and the pull down menu will appear. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility . Format the drive GUID and Apple extended. Now you can install a system.

Replacing the drive is just the first part… You still need to install the OS onto the drive. Do you have the original OS install CD/DVD or a bootable drive to recover from?
