I have a 2017 27 inch iMac and the hard drive needs to be replaced. The repair shop said they could upgrade to an SSD drive for $500 total. The trade in value is $1100. Would you upgrade or just trade in and buy a new one?
You know you can do this your self if you follow directions to the letter for a lot less! So here’s the needed part, tools and sundries iMac Intel 27" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit $260 USD for a 1TB drive. And here’s the guide iMac 27" 2017 Hard Drive Replacement The hardest part is pulling the display off. Many people use the wrong tools and/or force things. If you follow the guide to the letter you’ll be fine! I would not do anything with the PCIe blade SSD which is the cache drive to your HDD when you had a Fusion Drive set. Wipe it down and just use it to hold loose files.
that configuration is still very usable. A 1TB SSD will make it seem like a new comouter. They do not cost that much if you install it yourself. About $100. They are not hard to replace as it is all plug-able. But then I am not a MAC person. IMHO, 400-500 is to much to pay.
Don’t bother opening up the machine. I would say run an external SSD. Boot up will be almost as fast, cheap fix, no hassles!
