Chosen Solution
So i have been searching around online for a SSD that i can use to upgrade the current factory SSD from 240GB to 1TB. I was looking at the Aurora Pro but that is retailing at anywhere between £270 - £390 GB which if i’m honest is a bit excessive considering that there are 1TB SSD drives of a similar physical size that i am finding online that are under £100. I have just spent £124 on replacing the battery and swapping out a faulty fan and if i add on nearly £400 for a 1TB SSD thats nearly £524 already and thats not including the repair on the microphone and keyboard replacement i still have to do. I am basically trying to refurb my mac instead of buying a new one as i like this macbook, it has served me well over the years. Is there any other viable cheaper option than the Aurora Pro drives. I have found several drives that look like they would be compatible, case in point this drive : https://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/ct1000p1ss… However the crucial website tells me this isnt compatible with my mac. Surely there has to be other options than just the Aurora. That is so so so %#*@ over priced for a 1TB SSD for a 7 year old macbook. Can anyone who is more in the know than me offer some advice and recommendations?
Apple blade SSD’s are not the same as M.2 SSD’s. Here’s a good write up on them The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs Apple SSD’s and the two 3rd party makers (OWC & Transcend) have the market cornered! So they do pull a premium price. M.2 SSD makers have been competing for market share dropping their prices to rock bottom as well as finding every way possible to lower the cost of the part. With such low prices people have tried making adapters to support the M.2 SSD’s inside the MacBook Pro’s. While they do appear to work day one, overtime they breakdown and need to be replaced well before the Apple or third party drives need to be. So one can be either penny wise - pound foolish or pay for the proper drive. Don’t get me wrong! I which Apple had gone with the M.2 drives it would have made life so much easier (and cheaper!)
